Extreme drought in Banyuasin Regency, South Sumatra, exposed the five-year-old murder case on Sunday, 6 September 2026.
Two female skeletons, sisters RM (18) and AM (13), were found in Keramat Raya, Talang Kelapa sub-district.
RM and AM were reported missing on 27 October 2021 while on their way to school.
Main perpetrator RS (27), RM's ex-boyfriend, and accomplice AD (25) were arrested Sunday night.
RS was arrested in Kenten, Talang Kelapa; AD in Sungai Sedapat, Talang Kelapa.
Motive: RS harbored resentment after RM's family rejected their romantic relationship.
Skeletons were discovered by local resident Rohani alias Otong around 10:00 WIB on Sunday.
Rohani found a rusted motorcycle frame while searching for firewood in the drained swamp area.
The abandoned house where the skeletons were found stands approximately 10 meters from the motorcycle frame site and 1 kilometer from the victims' home.
Police secured evidence including school uniforms, two book-filled bags, shoes, and jewelry belonging to the victims.
RS dated RM for approximately one year in 2021 before the breakup.
RS and AD stayed overnight at the abandoned house on 26 October 2021, armed with knives.
They placed a large wooden block across the road to ambush the sisters at around 07:00 WIB on 27 October 2021.
The murder was a premeditated act planned by RS with AD's involvement.
The location had been flooded and uninhabited for years until the prolonged drought dried it out, followed by a forest and land fire.
