Poin-Poin Utama

  • Seminar Nasional Hibrida Berseri held by AIPI on Wednesday (9/9/2026) discussed political parties as pillars of representative democracy.
  • Syamsuddin Haris, Professor of Research at BRIN, called political parties 'passengers of reform' lacking ideas and agendas for post-Soeharto Indonesia.
  • The 1998 Ciganjur Declaration by Abdurrahman Wahid, Amien Rais, Megawati Soekarnoputri, and Sultan Hamengku Buwono X was initiated by student activists, not political parties.
  • Reformation demands were voiced by students, NGOs, and religious organizations such as Nahdlatul Ulama and Muhammadiyah, not political parties.
  • Existing political parties are products of the Guided Democracy era extending four decades into military political involvement.
  • During the 1945 BPUPKI sessions, the term 'political party' was never mentioned.
  • The term 'political party' first appeared after amendments to the 1945 Constitution.
  • The pre-amendment 1945 Constitution contained no mention of political parties.
  • Syamsuddin stated Soeharto's disregard for political parties was 'reasonable' given their constitutional absence.
  • Public perceives DPR leadership as spokespersons for government rather than representatives of the people.
  • Indonesia's electoral district (dapil) system prevents meaningful interaction between representatives and constituents.
  • No mechanism exists for constituents to recall or sue underperforming representatives except waiting for the next election.
  • Political parties show no concern for fostering informed voters, resulting in no political education for the electorate.
  • Elections are treated as a routine five-year obligation rather than a political right, creating political ignorance.
  • Daniel Murdiyarso identified internal party issues as additional factors weakening the representative function.
